Driver killed when car crashes into tree and flips over, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed Wednesday night when a car crashed into a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jonathon D. Henry, a 20-year-old from Richland County, was the man who died in what Kershaw County Coroner David West called an accident.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. in Kershaw County, Lance Cpl. Lena Butler said Thursday.

Henry was driving a 2007 Honda Civic south on Koon Road, according to Butler. Near the intersection with Dry Branch Road the Honda ran off the right side of Koon Road and crashed into a tree before flipping over, Butler said.

Henry, who was the only person in the car, died at the scene, according to Butler.

No other injuries were reported.

Henry was not wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available. Neither Butler nor West said if the crash continues to be investigated by either the Highway Patrol or coroner’s office.

Less than 9 hours later, there was another fatal crash in Kershaw County.

At about 6:20 a.m. Thursday, there was a wreck at the intersection of U.S. 521 and Butternut Lane in Camden, according to West.

Patricia Clemmons, a 71-year-old Sumter resident, died at the scene, West said. She was wearing a seat belt, according to the coroner.

Through Sunday, 92 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least three people have died in Kershaw County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
