Child survives crash on I-95 that killed mother and father, SC coroner says

A couple from North Carolina was killed early Tuesday morning in a crash on Interstate 95 that left their child hospitalized, South Carolina officials said.

Fuquay Varina, N.C., residents Kyle Greene, 32, and Sara E. Greene, 33, died in what Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle called an accident.

They were involved in a two-vehicle collision that happened at about 12:45 a.m. on a stretch of I-95 in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Both a 1987 dump truck and a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox were driving north on I-95, according to Bennett. At the 87 mile marker, near the junction with Interstate 26, the Chevy SUV crashed into the rear of the dump truck, Bennett said.

The Chevy driver and a passenger in the front seat of the SUV died at the scene, according to Bennett. It was not clear who was driving the Chevy SUV.

Kyle and Sara Greene both died of multiple blunt force injuries, Fogle said.

Their child, who was a back-seat passenger in the Chevy SUV, was injured and taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, Bennett said. Further information on the child’s condition was not available.

“Our heart goes out to the family of these individuals, but more importantly, to this child who has lost both parents. Please keep this family in your prayers as they go through this very difficult time,” Fogle said.

Bennett said the dump truck driver, who was the only person in that vehicle, was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the Chevy SUV to collide with the dump truck was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 270 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least seven people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 46 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
