One person killed in early morning crash on I-20 & two others hurt, SC cops say

One person was killed and two others were hospitalized following an early morning crash on Interstate 20 over the weekend, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, on a stretch of I-20 in Darlington County, said Cpl. David Jones.

A 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe was driving west on I-20 when it crossed the median at the 138 mile marker, according to Jones. That’s in Darlington, about 8 miles from Darlington Raceway.

As the Hyundai was driving toward oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes of I-20 it crashed head-on with a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, Jones said.

The Hyundai driver died at the scene, according to Jones.

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Hyundai driver.

A passenger in the Hyundai suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, Jones said.

The Chevy driver also was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Jones.

Further information on the surviving victims’ conditions was not available.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the Hyundai to veer into the eastbound side of I-20 was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through May 18, at least 291 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 16 people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 20 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
