Driver killed in crash that left another person hospitalized, SC cops say
One person was killed and another was injured Sunday night in a crash in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Faraway Drive and Nearview Avenue, said Sgt. Tyler Tidwell. That’s in the Columbia area, near Richland Northeast High School, and half a mile from where a Columbia man was killed in a unrelated incident earlier in June.
A 2023 Chevrolet Silverado was driving north on Faraway Drive while a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading west on Nearview Avenue, according to Tidwell. The Chevy pickup truck collided with the Jeep SUV at the intersection, Tidwell said.
While the pickup driver, who was the only person in the Chevy, was not hurt, both the driver and passenger in the SUV were taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, according to Tidwell. The SUV driver died at the hospital, Tidwell said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the SUV driver.
Further information on the SUV passenger’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available. Tidwell did not say if the Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
Through June 8, at least 331 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 20 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 52 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
