A washout on a dam spillway has forced a closure along a road in Lexington County, the S.C. Department of Transportation said on Monday.

Forts Pond Road near Pelion has closed to traffic due to the washout, DOT said in a press release. Detour signs were directing traffic away from the road Monday afternoon.

DOT is working with other agencies to repair the road. It’s unclear how long Forts Pond Road will be closed, and it’s unclear what caused the washout. The department asks that drivers go slowly when approaching the work zone.

Forts Pond Road runs between U.S. 178 in Pelion and Poole’s Mill Road, about five miles away. According to DOT data, about 1,150 vehicles travel along Forts Pond near Pelion each day.
