Vehicle goes up in flames after crashing into ditch and tree, SC cops say
One person was killed early Wednesday morning in a fiery crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3 a.m. in Williamsburg County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A Chevrolet was driving east on Douglas Road, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Rachael Road the Chevy ran off the right side of Douglas Road and crashed into a ditch before hitting a tree, Glover said.
Then the Chevy was fully engulfed in flames and the driver died at the scene, according to Glover.
The Williamsburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Glover said the driver was the only person in the Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 371 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least four people have died in Williamsburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were seven deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
