One killed in collision with Columbia fire truck, SC Highway Patrol says
One person is dead after a fire engine in Columbia collided with a sedan, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Carolyn V. Collins, 64, of Columbia died in the collision, according to the Richland County coroner.
At around 6:49 p.m. Saturday, the driver of a 2010 Nissan was traveling north on Two Notch Road, near Decker Boulevard, while carrying one passenger. As the vehicle attempted to turn left from a median into a private driveway, it was struck by a 2020 Pierce fire truck, traveling north in the southbound lane on Two Notch Road, according to the Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred on the driver side of the vehicle as the fire engine employed emergency lights and sirens, a release said. The fire truck was responding to a two-alarm structure fire involving multiple homes, according to a social media post from the Columbia-Richland Fire Department.
While the driver was transported to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Collins was pronounced dead on the scene of the collision, the release said.
The driver of the fire truck and three passengers were also transported to Prisma Health Richland for injuries sustained during the crash. All had been released as of Sunday evening, according to the fire department, which will investigate the collision, according to a social media post.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the release said.
