21-year-old killed in crash that left another person injured, SC officials say

One person was killed and another was hospitalized Sunday after a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

William Ricky Lee Starr, a 21-year-old Lancaster County resident, died in what Kershaw County Coroner David West called an accident.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8 a.m. in Kershaw County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol.

A 2002 Honda sedan was driving south on Flat Rock Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Pine Bark Road the Honda ran off the right side of Flat Rock Road and hit a ditch before crashing into a tree, Ridgeway said. That’s near the Camden area.

Starr, who was a passenger in the Honda, died at the scene, according to West.

The driver was hurt and taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, Ridgeway said. Information on the driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either Starr or the driver were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 13, at least 449 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Kershaw County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
