Ambulance involved in deadly head-on crash, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed Sunday in a head-on crash that involved an ambulance, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened in Dorchester County at about 2:35 a.m., said Master Trooper William Bennett.

A 2016 Ford ambulance was driving north on U.S. 17 Alternate in the Lowcountry, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Sullivans Landing Road a 2004 Toyota sedan that was driving south on U.S. 17 Alternate collided head-on with the ambulance, Bennett said.

The Toyota driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Toyota driver.

Bennett said that neither the driver nor the passenger in the ambulance were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing safety restraints.

Information about what led to the head-on collision, and if the ambulance had its emergency lights activated, was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 20, at least 465 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 10 people have died in Dorchester County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 35 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
