Late-night SC hit and run leaves one person dead, Highway Patrol says

One person is dead following a hit-and-run collision in Sumter County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around midnight Saturday on Broad Street, five miles west of the city of Sumter, according to Master Trooper William Bennett. Two vehicles were involved, including a 2020 Honda moped and an unknown vehicle.

The operator of the moped and driver of the unknown vehicle were travelling east on Broad Street, a news release said. The unknown driver collided with the rear of the moped and fled the scene.

The driver of the moped was pronounced dead on the scene and has not yet been identified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Bennett said.
