Woman killed and two other people hospitalized after crash, SC officials say
A South Carolina woman was killed Wednesday when she and another pedestrian were hit by a pickup truck, according to officials.
Ashton Marie Galloway, a 32-year-old Sumter County resident, died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.
At about 12:10 p.m., Galloway was one of two people walking east on U.S. 76/Broad Street, said Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Not far from the intersection with Carter Road, both pedestrians were hit by a 2017 GMC pickup truck that was driving east on Broad Street, according to Bennett.
Galloway died at the scene, Baker said.
The other pedestrian as well as the pickup driver were hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Bennett. Further information on the surviving victims’ conditions was not available.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what led to the crash was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Through Sunday, 626 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
