Two people killed when vehicles crash on South Carolina road, officials say
Two people were killed in a recent crash that involved a moped and a car, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Midlands residents Tyrone C. Tyler and Audrey Hill died in the Friday morning wreck, Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle said. Tyler, a 55-year-old Orangeburg resident was the moped driver, and Hill, a 70-year-old from the Manning area of Clarendon County, was a passenger on the moped, according to the coroner’s office.
At about 2:25 a.m., Tyler was driving the 2024 JBLC moped south on U.S. 301/Five Chop Road, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol. Near the intersection with Jernigan Drive the moped was hit in the rear by a 2021 Kia sedan that was also driving south on Five Chop Road, according to Ridgeway.
Both Tyler and Hill were thrown from the moped into the road, Ridgeway said. Tyler and Hill each suffered blunt force injuries in the crash and died at the scene, according to Fogle.
Ridgeway said the Kia driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the moped riders were wearing helmets, or if the Kia driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the car to collide with the moped was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sept. 28, at least 656 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
