One person was killed in a crash Friday afternoon in Berkeley County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m., when the driver of a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south on U.S. 17 Alternate near the intersection of Peartree Lane, Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The Malibu sideswiped a 2015 Ford F-150 heading north on U.S. 17 Alternate and then collided head-on with a 2007 Freightliner Truck, also traveling north, a news release said.

The operator of the Malibu died on the scene, while the drivers of the Ford and Freightliner were not injured, according to Bennett.

Neither driver was carrying a passenger.

The deceased has not yet been identified by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Bennett said.
