Woman killed when car collided with moped is identified by SC coroner
One person was killed Sunday night when a moped and car were involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Beatrice Wilson Gallman, a 58-year-old Newberry resident, is the moped rider who died, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Wednesday.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Newberry County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol.
Both a moped and a 2010 Honda sedan were driving east on U.S. 76 near the Prosperity area, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Colony Church Road the Honda hit the rear of the moped, causing the bike to spill into the road, Ridgeway said.
Gallman died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.
Ridgeway said that the Honda driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the moped rider was wearing a helmet, or if the Honda driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Honda to collide with the moped was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. An autopsy will be performed, Kneece said.
At 9:25 p.m., the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said that a stretch of U.S. 76 was blocked because of the crash, leading to delays for drivers for several hours because of backed up traffic.
Through Sunday, 733 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least eight people have died in Newberry County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were eight deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
