Former high-ranking EMS official killed in crash, South Carolina coroner says
A South Carolina man who was killed Wednesday in a crash was a former high-ranking emergency medical services member, according to the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.
William “Bill” Williams, a 79-year-old Eutawville resident, died in wreck, Coroner Sean Fogle said Thursday. Williams was a retired Orangeburg County EMS training director, according to Fogle.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Williams was driving a 1997 Honda Gold Wing trike motorcycle west on Acme Street, according to Davidson. Near the intersection with Tunita Street, the motorcycle collided with a 2024 Ford SUV that was turning left into a private driveway, Davidson said.
Williams suffered blunt-force injuries in the crash and died at the scene, according to Fogle. Davidson said that Williams was the only person on the motorcycle, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Williams was wearing a helmet, or if anyone in the SUV was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with him for a number of years,” Fogle said in a news release. “Bill, as he was affectionately called, always had a story to share and a great person to be around. I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and the Orangeburg County EMS family.”
Through Sunday, 741 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 26 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 46 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
