Man killed in crash that left two more people hurt is identified by SC coroner

One person was killed Sunday morning in a crash on a Midlands road that left two others hospitalized, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

James Pratt Schumpert, an 87-year-old Newberry resident, is the man who died in the wreck, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Wednesday.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday in Newberry County, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.

A 2018 Cadillac sedan was driving south on Boyds Crossing Road, according to Davidson. As the Cadillac got to the intersection where Boyds Crossing Road becomes Shrine Club Road, the car was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was driving west on U.S. 76, Davidson said.

The Chevy pickup flipped over while the Cadillac ran off the right side of the road where it collided with a fence before hitting a trailer and a parked car and then crashing into a building, according to Davidson.

A passenger sitting in the front seat of the Cadillac, later identified as Schumpert, died at the scene, Davidson said.

Both the Cadillac driver and the Chevy driver were injured and taken to an area hospital, according to Davidson. Further information on their conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported in the wreck that continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office. An autopsy will be performed this week, Kneece said.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.

About 8 hours later, and approximately 20 miles away, there was another deadly collision in Newberry County.

At about 6:15 p.m., a person who was walking on State Park Road in the Prosperity area was killed, Davidson said. That’s near Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray.

Michael Stuart Reid, a 39-year-old Pomaria resident, was identified as the pedestrian who died, according to Kneece.

Reid was hit by a 2019 Toyota SUV that was driving south on State Park Road, according to Davidson.

Reid died at the scene, Davidson said.

No other injuries were reported.

Like the fatal wreck that occurred earlier Sunday in Newberry County, this crash also remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol as well as the coroner’s office and an autopsy will be performed this week.

Through Sunday, 822 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 12 people have died in Newberry County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were eight deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
