Driver killed when hit by car in crash on South Carolina road, cops say

One person was killed Sunday night when the motorcycle they were driving was involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. in Florence County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 2007 Harley-Davidson and a 2012 Nissan Altima were both driving north on U.S. 301, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Meadow Prong Road the Harley rider lost control and the motorcycle spilled into the road, Ridgeway said. The Harley rider was then hit by the Nissan, according to Ridgeway.

The motorcycle rider died at the scene, Ridgeway said.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Harley-Davidson driver.

Ridgeway said that the car driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, or if the car driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Dec. 7, at least 822 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 35 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 25 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
