One person killed and another hurt in crash on I-26 ramp, SC cops say

One person was killed and another was injured Wednesday in a crash on a part of Interstate 26 in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Daniel James White, a 60-year-old Landrum resident, is the victim who died, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Thursday.

The collision happened on the entrance ramp to the westbound side of I-26 at the 113-mile marker, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol. That’s by line separating Cayce and West Columbia, near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

A 2014 Mazda sedan, with utility trailer attached, was legally parked by the entrance ramp, according to Ridgeway. White, who Ridgeway called a pedestrian, was standing on the shoulder of the entrance ramp while working on utility trailer.

A 2009 Ford pickup truck was driving west on the ramp when it ran off the right side of the road and hit the trailer and the pedestrian before crashing into the back of the Mazda, according to Ridgeway.

White died at the scene, Fisher said.

The pickup driver was hurt and taken to Lexington Medical Center, according to Ridgeway. Further information on the pickup driver’s condition was not available.

While Fisher said that White was outside his vehicle when he was hit, there was no word if he was the driver of the Mazda, or if anyone else was in the car.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about why the pickup ran off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 847 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 35 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 50 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
