Crash blocks all northbound lanes of interstate running through Columbia area

A Wednesday morning crash blocked one side of a major interstate running through the Columbia area, creating delays for drivers on the morning commute.

All the northbound lanes on Interstate 77 were temporarily closed following the collision that happened at about 6 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred near Exit 24 on I-77, which is the junction with U.S. 21 in the Blythewood area of Richland County.

Information about the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

There was no word if the wreck caused any injuries.

Traffic cameras showed that vehicles were backed up for miles on I-77, as emergency responders were at the scene of the crash.

At about 7:30 a.m., SCDOT reported that no lanes were closed.
