Driver killed when truck runs off road and crashes into a tree, SC cops say
One person was killed Wednesday in an early-morning crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4:50 a.m. in Calhoun County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A 2013 GMC pickup truck was driving east on Preference Road, according to Glover. Near the intersection with F R Huff Drive in the St. Matthews area, the pickup ran off the side of Preference Road where it hit a ditch then crashed into a tree, Glover said.
The pickup driver died at the scene, according to Glover.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Glover said the driver was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 14 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
This was the new year’s first deadly crash reported in Calhoun County, where at least six people died in crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
