South Carolina man killed in crash at busy intersection, coroner says

A South Carolina man died in a hospital in Georgia the day after he was involved in a crash, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Willie Allen, a 58-year-old Aiken resident, died Feb. 21 following what the coroner’s office called an accident.

At about 7:40 p.m. on Feb. 20, Allen was walking in the road in the area of York Street Northeast and Rutland Drive, the coroner’s office said Tuesday in a news release. The pedestrian was hit by a 2015 Nissan Altima, then taken to WellStar MCG Health in Augusta, Georgia, according to the release.

At 9:56 a.m. on Feb. 21, Allen died at the hospital from the injuries he suffered in the wreck, the coroner’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the Nissan driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety. Results of toxicology tests are pending, the coroner’s office said.

Through Sunday, 93 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least two people have died in Aiken County crashes this year, and 23 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
