Tennessee teenager killed in crash on highway in South Carolina, coroner says

A teenager was killed Friday night when the vehicle she was driving collided with two tractor trailers on a stretch of Interstate 20 in South Carolina, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.

Chelsea Emily Moran, a 19-year-old Chattanooga, Tennessee resident, died in what Coroner David West called an accident.

The three-vehicle collision happened at about 7:50 p.m. at the 92-mile marker of I-20, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s near the junction with U.S. 601 in the Lugoff area of Kershaw County.

Moran was driving a 2014 Dodge east on I-20 when the vehicle hit the rear of an eastbound 2016 International tractor trailer, according to Davidson. The tractor trailer swerved into the median where it overturned, while the Dodge drove through the median and into the westbound lanes of I-20 and crashed into an oncoming 2026 Volvo tractor trailer, Davidson said.

Moran died at the scene, according to West.

There was no word if either of the tractor trailer drivers were hurt, but Davidson did not report any other injuries.

It was not clear if any of the people involved in the crashes were wearing seatbelts.

Information about what caused the Dodge to hit the International semi truck was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Feb. 22, at least 93 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least three people have died in Kershaw County crashes this year, and 15 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
