Truck crashes into mailbox and tree, killing driver, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed early Sunday morning when a pickup truck crashed in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Timothy Lee Morton, a 48-year-old Lexington resident, is the person who died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2:25 a.m. in Lexington, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

Morton was driving a 2004 Chevrolet pickup south on Robbie Road when the truck ran off right side of the road, not far from Exit 51 on I-20, according to Ridgeway. The Chevy then hit a mailbox and crashed into a tree, Ridgeway said.

Morton was taken to Lexington Medical Center and died there, according to Ridgeway.

No other injuries were reported.

Morton was not wearing a seatbelt, Fisher said.

Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through March 8, at least 119 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 13 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
