Driver killed in crash that left another hospitalized, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed and another was injured Sunday night in a crash at the intersection of two Midlands roads, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 9 p.m. in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 2010 Honda CRV was driving north on U.S. 301, while a 2016 Audi A3 was heading west on Salem Road, according to Ridgeway. That’s in the New Zion area of Clarendon County.

At the intersection, the Audi was turning onto U.S. 301 when it was hit on the driver’s side by the Honda, Ridgeway said.

The Audi driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Audi driver.

The Honda driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, Ridgeway said. Further information on the Honda driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through March 15, at least 140 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least eight people have died in Clarendon County crashes this year, and 11 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
