Car runs off South Carolina road, killing one and injuring another, cops say
One person was killed Monday in a crash that left another person injured, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:10 p.m. in Williamsburg County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.
A 2021 Chevrolet sedan was driving north on Hemingway Highway, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Taylor Circle the Chevy ran off the left side of the road where it crashed into a ditch and overturned, Pye said.
A passenger in the Chevy died at the scene, according to Pye.
The Williamsburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passenger.
The Chevy driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, Pye said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 249 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least one person has died in Williamsburg County crashes this year, and 12 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
