One killed and another injured when tractor trailer crashes on I-77, SC cops say

One person was killed and another was injured in a Sunday morning crash on Interstate 77 in Columbia that involved a tractor trailer, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision in Richland County happened at about 5:15 a.m., said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.

A 2020 Volvo tractor trailer was driving south on I-77, according to Davidson. At the 16-mile marker, near the junction with I-20, the semi truck ran off the left side of I-77 and crashed into guardrail and then a concrete column that supports an overpass, Davidson said.

The driver died, according to Davidson.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

A passenger sitting in the front seat of the tractor trailer was hurt and taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Davidson said. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the tractor trailer to veer off I-77 was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through April 26, at least 249 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 19 people have died in Richand County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
