A busy corridor in Lexington County began a facelift toward easing traffic congestion, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

A groundbreaking ceremony held Friday marked the start of the department’s plan to widen S-48 (Columbia Avenue) in the Town of Chapin, toward improving traffic flow between I-26 and the Lake Murray area, according to a news release.

Improvements will stretch from the interchange of I-26 and S-48 to the intersection of S-48, S-51 (Amicks Ferry Road) and U.S. 76 (Chapin Road) in downtown Chapin, the release said.

The project will include fresh grassy medians, starting near I-26 and continuing to a new road that’ll be constructed near Chapin High School that leads to a new roundabout, according to the release.

Improvements are slated to be completed in October 2029, the release said.
