Forecasters: Storms coming Sunday, Monday may bring stronger tornadoes than predicted

Stronger tornadoes than originally predicted may come with severe weather through parts of South Carolina between Sunday night and Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service..

Isolated tornadoes with wind speeds of up to 111 to 135 miles per hour or more are possible during a storm that could hit the state late Sunday and continue into Monday morning, according to meteorologists.

They predict the most severe part of storm, which could also produce some hail, will come through Aiken and Barnwell counties and continue through Orangeburg County and the Lowcountry.

As of now, Columbia and Lexington are not in the path of the most severe weather that has been forecast; meteorologists have predicted a “slight” chance of severe weather for those areas.

Last week, 21 tornadoes ranging in wind speeds of 65 to 165 miles per hour touched down in South Carolina, according to the National Weather Service. The storms killed at least nine people.
