First frost hits the Midlands. Here’s where temperatures are headed this week
The city of Columbia’s first frost of the season came and went Monday morning as temperatures hit 32 degrees at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.
“We did have reports of patchy frost pretty much all around the Midlands of South Carolina down into eastern Georgia a little bit,” said Matt Gropp, a meteorologist for the weather service.
Last week, parts of Fairfield and Lancaster counties had reports of frost, Gropp said.
But the cold weather will moderate as temperatures are expected to reach 72 degrees at the airport Monday, Gropp said.
The temperatures could reach the upper 30s again Monday evening into Tuesday morning, resulting in a weather service advisory for people to cover plants or bring them inside if they’re susceptible to cold weather.
“We’re not expecting to be quite a cold as last (Sunday) night,” Gropp said.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to high 70s later in the week before another drop in temperatures, the National Weather Service said.
A cold front is expected to come through the area Wednesday and Thursday, bringing rain into the weekend. The front also means cooler temperatures for the area over the weekend with highs in the 50s and 60s.
