One of the year’s coldest nights is on the way for the Midlands. How long will it last?

You may need a sweater when you go to bed tonight. At the very least, make sure to have enough blankets to keep you warm.

The National Weather Service expects the low temperatures in the Midlands to reach the mid-20s, and Wednesday morning is expected to be one of the coldest of the year.

A freeze warning is slated to go into effect at midnight and be in place until 9 a.m.

The below freezing temperatures also will end the growing season in the Midlands, the National Weather Service said.

Frost and freezing conditions will kill sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, the weather service said. People are advised to protect plants from the cold. Outdoor water pipes should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly to prevent them from bursting, the weather service suggested.

But the freezing temperatures won’t last long.

Wednesday’s high temperature is expected to be 57 degrees.

On Thanksgiving, the high temperature, will reach 65. For Black Friday, the high temperature will be 59 degrees.
