Columbia breaks heat record for a December day this week

Friday was the the hottest Dec. 3 on record in Columbia, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature reached 82 degrees, the weather service said, breaking the previous record of 79 degrees. The previous record was first set in 1970 and repeated in 1991. The new record temperature was recorded near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Records of temperatures have been kept by the National Weather Service since 1887.
