Below freezing temperatures expected across the Midlands, weather forecasters say

Temperatures in the Midlands are expected to drop below freezing Saturday night, according to meteorologists.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Columbia predict that temperatures will be in the low- to middle-20s in Richland, Lexington, Kershaw, Sumter, Fairfield, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties.

In parts of Newberry County, the temperature may drop as low as 20 degrees, forecasters said.

A “hard freeze” is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“The cold air is being ushered in by breezy northwest winds” behind a storm front that passed through Friday and Saturday morning, the weather service said.

Temperatures from the Upstate to the Lowcountry of South Carolina will be dropping, the weather service said. The coldest weather will be in the northern Midlands and along the border with North Carolina.

The Midlands area likely will warm into the 50s on Sunday.
