Severe weather forecast in Columbia could swamp plans to celebrate one day this week

Decision makers trying to schedule a possible parade to celebrate the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team for winning the national championship will want to eliminate Tuesday from potential plans.

Severe weather is forecast to affect the Columbia area throughout that day, according to the National Weather Service.

Any outdoor plans could be scuttled by thunderstorms, rain and powerful winds along with the possibility of flooding and tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.

Rainfall across the Midlands could start in the morning, and severe weather is possible throughout the day and into Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. There is a 100% chance of rain at night, the forecast shows.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are a threat, especially in the southern portion of the Midlands, the National Weather Service said.

Those storms could create damaging winds gusts and potentially a few tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

Powerful winds and tornadoes could cause considerable damage to trees and branches, in addition to mobile homes, roofs and outbuildings. Vehicles would also be under siege in the case of a tornado.

Damage to trees and branches creates the possibility of downed power lines and outages.

Up to 2 inches of rainfall is possible in the Midlands, and the amounts of rain could be heavier locally, according to the National Weather Service.

All of the precipitation could lead to flash flooding and river flooding, the National Weather Service said.

Additionally, thunderstorms can produce dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.

No advisories, warnings or watches have been issued yet for the Midlands, but that is subject to change.

After the weather system moves out of the area, showers might continue, but there is less than 40% chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures could reach possible highs in the 80s, the forecast shows. The weekend is expected to be sunny with cooler temperatures in the 60s, according to the forecast.
