It’s spring in South Carolina. Thunderstorms are around the corner in the coming days

National Weather Service

Pleasant, warm spring weather (minus the pollen) has settled over the Midlands this week. But that’s going to change as dark storm clouds gather on the horizon.

Rainy weather is expected to blow into the area late on Sunday, with the possibility for heavy thunderstorms on Monday, the Columbia office of the National Weather Service warns.

“A cold front moves through the region Monday, likely bringing thunderstorms during the afternoon,” the service’s forecasters said in a weather update this week. “The potential will be there for some of these storms to be severe.”

Highs are expected to hit 80 degress Fahrenheit on Friday and Saturday, with cooler weather blowing in for Sunday and a 50% chance of rain in the afternoon, according to AccuWeather. Rain and thunderstorm chances increase to 80% on Monday.

The expected rain could be a blessing for South Carolina, as the state has battled wildfires in recent days. On Friday, firefighters were battling a blaze across more than 8,000 acres near Table Rock in Pickens County.

“Much needed rain is expected across the region with Sunday and Monday’s rain and thunderstorm chances,” the National Weather Service says.
