No white Christmas in Columbia, but it may get close to different weather record
It’s not Christmas in July, but the weather forecast for Thursday’s holiday shows it will feel a lot like July on Christmas.
Even though it’s winter, there’s a greater chance of Dec. 25 temperatures approaching the record high of 79 degrees than any possibility of a white Christmas in Columbia, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures could exceed 70 degrees Thursday in South Carolina’s Midlands region, the forecast shows. Although the record high set in 1955 likely won’t be surpassed, there’s also no chance of snow — not a flurry, dusting or a single snowflake.
That’s not really a surprise, since only trace amounts of snow have been recorded on Christmas in Columbia, according to the National Weather Service.
It’s uncommon for it to snow in the Columbia area before January or February, according to the National Weather Service. But snow, any time of the year, is far from a frequent occurrence in the Midlands.
Sunny conditions are expected, with The Weather Channel predicting a high of 77 degrees, and only a 7% chance of precipitation.
So it should be hot and dry, probably not just like the Christmases you used to know.
It’s definitely not the type of weather Christmas is known for in the movies. It’s not even like the weather recently experienced in Columbia.
Temperatures fell below freezing on multiple occasions last week in the Midlands, with lows in the teens in some areas. Wind chills made conditions feel even colder.
A steady thaw has been underway in recent days.
It will continue as mild weather is forecast Monday and Tuesday. That’s expected to be followed by five consecutive days with high temperatures in the 70s, the forecast shows.
The final days of 2025 will see temperatures grow colder, with possible overnight lows beneath the freezing point, according to the forecast. But there still won’t be any snow as the forecast shows there’s just the slightest chance of precipitation a few days into the first week of 2026.
