South Carolinians take to social media as snow stacks up across the Midlands
As snow begins to cover parts of the Midlands, a number of South Carolinians quickly grabbed their phones to document the rare experience on social media.
After two winter weather warnings — calling for ice and lite snow — fell flat earlier this month, some South Carolinians appeared excited to wake up to the white fluffy substance on Saturday, as seen in a number of videos posted to TikTok.
Winter Storm Gianna is expected to bring a historic amount of snow to the Midlands at around 6-9 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The event is forecasted to rank in top 15 of snowfall levels in Columbia since 1887.
But for some South Carolinians who rarely witness snow during the winter months, the event appears welcomed.
Still, one user mocked the event, posting a video with a minimal amount of snow on the ground along with an overlay that read, “This is the devastating snow in Columbia, S.C.”
While some areas across the Midlands are seeing light snow as of Saturday morning, the pace is expected to ramp up around the afternoon and is forecast to last past midnight.
In another video, a meteorologist responded to a user asking whether they’d be able to get to Arby’s on Two Notch Road amid the storm.
“The Arby’s trip needs to happen around lunch then head home and have your roast beef sandwich,” the meteorologist replied.
Meanwhile, in the northern part of the state, such as Greenville and Gaffney, snow has completely blanketed the ground, leaving Jordan Norris to refer to it as a “winter wonderland.”
The winter storm is expected bring unusual wind gusts of up to 25-30 mph across the state, reducing visibility, according to the NWS. An extreme cold warning will remain in effect through Saturday night where temperatures could reach a low of -5 to 5 degrees due to wind chill.
