A report was issued from the NWS Charleston SC on Friday at 5:45 a.m. for dense fog until 7:30 a.m. The alert is for Inland Colleton, Inland Berkeley, Inland Jasper, Coastal Colleton, Coastal Jasper and Tidal Berkeley as well as Allendale, Hampton, Dorchester, Beaufort and Charleston counties.

"A cold front is expected to push south over the South Carolina Lowcountry this morning. As the front approaches, fog should gradually develop across portions of the Lowcountry and southeast Georgia early this morning. The fog may become locally dense, reducing visibilities on area roadways. The fog should generally dissipate by 7:30 a.m.," states the NWS.

According to the NWS, "If driving, slow down and leave extra distance ahead of you in case a sudden stop is needed."

This alert is in effect until 7:30 a.m.

Navigating fog: Safety tips by the NWS

If you must venture out in foggy conditions, keep these safety tips from the NWS in mind:

Reduce speed:

  • Slow down and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.

Visibility priority:

  • Ensure your vehicle is visible to others by using low-beam headlights, which automatically activate your taillights. Utilize fog lights if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Avoid high-beams:

  • Refrain from using high-beam headlights, as they create glare that impairs your visibility on the road.

Keep a safe distance:

  • Maintain a significant following distance to account for abrupt stops or shifts in traffic patterns.

Stay in your lane:

  • Use the road's lane markings as a guide to staying in the correct lane.

Zero visibility strategy:

  • In situations of near-zero visibility due to dense fog, activate your hazard lights and seek a secure location, such as a nearby business's parking lot, to pull over and come to a stop.

No parking options:

  • If no parking area is available, pull your vehicle as far to the roadside as possible. Once stationary, turn off all lights except the hazard flashers, engage the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not illuminated, reducing the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.

By adhering to these recommendations from the NWS, you can navigate foggy conditions more safely, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring your well-being.
