A heat advisory will be in place until 8 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said.

Heat index values in the Midlands are expected to reach 105 degrees with high temperatures and high humidity.

Hot weather is forecasted to continue over the weekend. Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to reach 101 degrees in Columbia, according to the weather service.

The weather service advised people to stay in air-conditioned rooms, drink plenty of fluids, stay out the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

When outside, people should wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Strenuous activities should take place in the early morning or early evening, the weather service said.
