The South Carolina Emergency Management Division is set to participate in an earthquake drill Thursday as part of the Great Southeast Shakeout.

At 10:21 a.m., an emergency signal is scheduled to be sent out on the NOAA tone-alert weather radio and broadcast media.

People are encouraged to practice protecting themselves during an earthquake which includes the “dropping to your hands and knees, covering your head and neck and crawling underneath a table or desk, and holding on to your shelter until shaking stops.

South Carolina has had nine low-magnitude earthquakes this year. The state experiences between 10 and 20 earthquakes a year, EMD said.

Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington also are participating in the drill.
