Winter is coming. Cold temperatures arriving, frost possible in Columbia, forecasters say

A cold wind is blowing.

The National Weather Service said Saturday that a dry cold front will move into the Midlands and Columbia overnight Saturday into Sunday. The front will reinforce cold, dry air already in the area and cause temperatures to drop into the low 30s.

Widespread frost and freezing is expected in the northwestern Midlands counties, including Newberry and Fairfield counties. The weather service issued a frost advisory for Columbia, Lexington, Sumter, Orangeburg and Kershaw.

The NWS recommends covering any sensitive plants outdoors overnight or bringing them inside.

While Saturday’s overnight low temperature is expected to dip to 33 degrees, the high Sunday is predicted to be 62 degrees.
