SC’s Class of 2020 grads have shown all of us how to embrace and adapt to change
To South Carolina’s High School Class of 2020:
Congratulations on completing 12 years of school work — and on your graduation from high school.
This is an exciting time for you and your families, and I hope that you have had the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the moment despite the unique challenges we’re now facing.
As you embark on the next stage of your life there is excitement, but also uncertainty and even anxiety. The future is unknown and technology is moving society at an ever-increasing pace. But do not panic when you have such feelings of uncertainty — because you have what it takes.
The Class of 2020 is the “Class of Adaptability.”
The fact is the world has changed more during your 18 years of life than it has during any other time, and you have adapted.
A worldwide pandemic made its way to South Carolina just as you were planning proms and senior trips while focusing on finishing your final semester of school.
But you have adapted to these changes.
And as you move forward — whether your next step is college or technical education, joining the workforce or pursuing public service in the military — the world will continue to change.
But you will adapt to those changes, too.
Those who can embrace change will find purpose, happiness and prosperity.
And you are prepared to embrace such change.
Why?
Because you have shown that you are the “Class of Adaptability.”
Speaking of purpose, it is essential to know that you are on this Earth for a purpose greater than yourself, and that you have what it takes to achieve that purpose.
The basic rules of life are universal and straightforward:
▪ Treat others the way you want to be treated.
▪ Realize that respect must be earned; it is not a right.
▪ Be truthful.
▪ Keep your commitments.
▪ Work hard and have the grit to stick with it.
▪ Ask for help when you need it, but carry your own load when you can.
And, most of all, stay true to your faith.
Your state is enthusiastic about your future, and we look forward to the contributions you will make to your communities — and to the world.
Godspeed,
State Sen. Greg Hembree
