Letters: SC DOT needs reform, not money
The state Transportation Department is pulling out all the stops in its effort to get more money to mismanage: It is now trying to blame highway deaths on the lack of funds to make road repairs. That’s just a pitch to get citizens on board with a gas tax increase. More money would only give the agency more power, and that’s all it cares about. The state gets more than $3 from me every time I fill up my tank and numerous dollars from all the other auto fees.
The agency needs to be restructured and all non-essential jobs eliminated. Every dollar spent by the new agency should be reported monthly to an oversight committee, which should approve all new jobs. The head of the Transportation Commission said he wants a 20-cents-per-gallon increase in the gas tax. That’s insane.
Put people in charge who are concerned about our roads and saving money and see what happens.
