Letters: Isn’t a university president as valuable as a coach?
The letter from Michael Kantz lamenting the $1 million salary being paid to USC President Harris Pastides (“Give Pastides’ raise to employees,” Sept. 5) made me wonder: What are his thoughts concerning the multimillion-dollar salaries being paid to college coaches?
Surely a man who has dedicated his life to education and is head of a major university is worth more than someone who coaches an inconsequential game.
If there was never another football, basketball or baseball game played in college, what difference would it make to the college learning experience?
Without a competent leader, a university would be like a body without a head. A well-trained and dedicated staff needs a leader to succeed.
If that were not the case, Gens. Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur would not have been needed during World War II.
