Letters: Kaepernick protest is misguided
San Francisco 49s quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s sit-down protest during the national anthem is the wrong way to voice his displeasure about racial injustices.
Mr. Kaepernick has a constitutional right to express his concerns, but his unpatriotic method of protesting has negatively changed the narrative.
Mr. Kaepernick and his supporters should compare their protest of the shooting deaths of a few black citizens with the millions of Americans of all colors who gave their lives in wars against tyranny just so Mr. Kaepernick and all Americans can still have the freedom to protest.
Our national anthem and flag are the two iconic symbols of America and its values. To show disrespect for them denigrates the sacrifices of the many who fought to retain our freedom.
These freedoms have allowed Colin Kaepernick, a black multimillionaire athlete, to become successful. America will never be perfect, but America allows more opportunities for the advancement of African-Americans than any other country.
