Letters: Police are increasingly like military personnel

I’m old, and like a lot of old men I spent a few years in the military during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

Whenever I see a young man or woman in uniform, traveling or just in the grocery store, it brings me back to when I was in their place, obeying orders, complaining about everything and counting the days till we were out. So I always approach them and thank them for their service. It seems like the least I can do, since they are putting themselves in harm’s way for me.

At breakfast just the other day, I saw a young man and woman in uniform and repeated the “thank you.” They were two young police officers — another group of people who are increasingly putting themselves in harm’s way for you and me.
