Letters: Don’t applaud unsportsmanlike players

While I applaud our Gamecocks for their recent hard-fought victories, I cannot stomach the thug mentality exhibited by some players or the support heaped upon them by their fellows after they are ejected from the game. Giving a bad player a “well done” slap on the helmet is appalling when all that player did was damage his team’s game-winning potential by eliminating his ability to contribute.

When a player is ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct, his first act should be to report to his coach and surrender his helmet in shame before leaving the stadium. He should not be allowed to strut off in full uniform under a shower of complimentary backslaps, fist bumps and high fives.

Perhaps Coach Will Muschamp could require this and show the SEC and America that our university does not tolerate such thuggish behavior from its athletes.
