Letters: Gifted students enjoying new direction
I was invited recently to speak at the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville, a remarkable gem for gifted high school students. I was happy to tell the students about the life of my father, who was portrayed by Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s movie “Bridge of Spies.” I was also impressed by how eager the students were to absorb new concepts.
The school’s new president, Hector Flores, who has vast experience nationally and internationally, has brought an invigorating approach to creating an integrated community of thinkers, while enhancing the curriculum. The high school students I met impressed me as intensely dedicated to achievement.
I am proud of what our state dollars are providing to 300 of the brightest kids in our state, so I wanted to share my awe of this quiet jewel in our educational crown. We should support productive new concepts for brilliant students.
