Letters: No one wants higher taxes, but SC needs gas tax hike
Like Gov. Henry McMaster, I do not like the idea of raising taxes. But while raising the gas tax may be the “last resort” for the governor, driving on our crumbling roads is the last resort for many motorists.
With gas prices low right now, a consumer tax is the fairest solution to all. Those who don’t drive will not be impacted at all, and more than a third of the user tax will be paid by out-of-state residents who use our highways but don’t pay our other taxes.
South Carolina used to have the best roads around, but there seems to have been little effort or money used to maintain that excellence.
I seriously hope that our new governor will back the effort to fix our deplorable highways.
