Thank you for publishing the Feb. 17 article, “How one jazz musician made his mark in SC.” As a longtime friend and fan of Steve Watson, it was a pleasure to see such a fine home-grown musician highlighted.

Since I graduated from Newberry College as a music major in 1969, I just missed being a classmate of his. But I learned what a superb and gifted musician he was from two of my mentors, Charles “Chief” Pruitt, director of bands, and Darr Wise, professor of music theory.

I’ve always thought his story — local boy makes good but leaves the bright lights of the big city to move back to South Carolina so he could raise his daughters in a more normal atmosphere — a great one.

Thanks again, and I hope some of the music lovers in your readership go out and buy his CDs in support of such a talent.
