Letters: Government broken at all levels

tglantz@thestate.com

I have lived in four other states over 50 years and have never seen the level of corruption, malfeasance and incompetence that 16 years in Columbia have shown me.

The prison finances and management are routinely a problem, and now the Department of Juvenile Justice is in big trouble.

The Transportation Department doesn’t have enough money to fix the roads but can pay to repave perfectly good stretches of Interstate 77 and have money left to name intersections after commission members.

The State Retirement System has a $20 billion funding shortfall.

State government seems to have little or no data security.

Then-Gov. Nikki Haley had to remove members of the Richland County Recreation Commission, which can’t be done unless there’s a serious problem.

Not to mention the scandals in small towns.

Can we get some adults in charge around here?

I will oppose every increase in taxes and fees until competent, independent accounting and legal experts prove that our dollars are being spent wisely.
